HOUSE of LaDOSHA Knows That U Know The Pose
I can’t pinpoint exactly when I discovered HOUSE of LaDOSHA – it was sometime in December – but I do remember I found their music through a referral on Twitter, and thinking, “this is exactly what social media is for”. LaDOSHA’s music is the most original and interesting I’ve heard in a really long minute. The first song I’d listened to was ‘THIS IS UR BRAIN” which is a trippy, distorted, mall goth track, and was a fantastic starting point.
I have to say I love the queering going on with this music – Antonio Blair, who is credited as being the creator of HOUSE of LaDOSHA, is a male rapping from a female’s perspective. The reappropriation of predominantly male-oriented sexualized language in rap is now from a lady’s perspective. Throughout the available tracks I’ve heard, the content revolves around her (Antonio’s) sexual appetite and confidence, power dynamic with sexual partners, and fashion obsessions (“I think I’m Kate Moss / Naomi Campbell / Up in French Vogue / You know the pose”) among a lot of other things. It’s pretty awesome. I feel like this music is feeding into a lot of fear directed toward sexual women (‘WITCHES OF BUSHWICK‘ specifically comes to mind here) which I could discuss forever because it’s fascinating.
But on top of all this feminist/queering discourse, this music is just plain fun! I am obsessed with LaDOSHA’s re-edit of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s H.A.M. This music is well worth checking out, so here’s LaDOSHA’s video for ‘BMF (Black/Model/Famous)’ to give you some great visual accompaniment to the confidence and tongue-in-cheek fun Blair exudes in her music. Also the MacBook Photobooth aesthetic to the whole video is an interesting bonus that instead of detracting from the effect of the music, adds to the lo-fi messy production quality of a lot of LaDOSHA’s branding.
